Ms, pothi, size 48,2 : 10,6 cm (43,6 : 8,9), fol. 1-246r, 22-29 lines, left margin r: Tibetan chapter number (ka – tha), followed by corresponding Galik-letter, Mongolian chapter number and chapter designation terigün bölög, qoyaduγar bölög etc., followed by Mongolian pagination; the pagination written in black runs through the whole text; the first two fols. of each separate chapter have a separate Mongolian pagination in red script; chapter kha has a separate Mongolian pagination throughout the chapter. Calamus, alternating red and black script; the first two fols. of each chapter are framed in the colours red, yellow and black, the remaining fols. are framed in yellow; many Tibetan glosses throughout the text. The cover and back fols. are strengthened with cloth; the title cover has a hand-drawn yellowish ornamental frame.

The Altan gerel was first printed in 1659 in Beijing (Heissig 1954, No. 2). The rhymed colophon of the copy of the Ernst collection is identical with the colophon of the printed edition of 1721, with the exception that the name of the monk who prepared the edition for print is omitted (compare Heissig/Sagaster 1961, No. 185). No date is given.¹
