Despite its undeniable presence and importance in the local music scene, Swiss choral life has so far received little attention from musicologists. Perhaps because choral singing is mainly practiced in an amateur context; perhaps because it is not always dedicated to the “great” composers of the Western classical repertoire; perhaps because it is an activity that is inextricably linked to social life – the reasons for the lack of attention paid to Swiss choral singing by musicology may be manifold. However, the fact is that choral singing, with its many facets, is a subject of research that reveals not only aspects of choral composition, performance practice or musical life. Research into choral life also has the potential to shed light on questions of history, political and social life, and gender issues.
